As communities across the country mark Mabo Day on 3 June, the Koorie Heritage Trust is bringing people together in Narrm, Melbourne, for a special evening celebrating the enduring legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo.
NITV Radio spoke with Koorie Heritage Trust CEO Tom Mosby about the significance of Mabo Day and the importance of honouring one of the most influential figures in Australian history.
Mabo Day commemorates the landmark 1992 High Court decision that overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius and recognised the native title rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The decision paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993 and remains a defining moment in the ongoing fight for land rights and justice.
To mark the occasion, the Koorie Heritage Trust, in partnership with the City of Melbourne and supported by Federation Square, is presenting a free Mabo Day Celebration Concert.
The event will feature Torres Strait Islander performers including singer Kee'ahn, musician Jessie Lloyd, DJ randals dad and MC Leon Filewood.
Mosby reflected on the continued relevance of Eddie Mabo's legacy more than three decades after the historic decision, highlighting the importance of education, cultural celebration and community connection.
The Mabo Day Celebration Concert will take place on Wednesday 3 June from 6pm to 8.30pm at The Edge, Federation Square.
