A solar powered energy system has been installed in Mumuthumburru (West Island) in remote Northern Territory enabling residents to return to Country supported by a 100% renewable energy system and the restoration of critical water and communication services.
The installation of the solar powered energy system stems from a campaign led by local families to source independent funding to restore energy services, including touring a short film Power To Country.
The film features the story of Garrwa elder Shirley Simon, who like many other r Mumuthumburru residents, was forced to relocate from their homeland to Borroloola in 2021 after their former solar system was decommissioned.

Genevieve Grieves, Co-founder of GARUWA and supervising director of the Power to Country lauded the successful completion of the project.
"This achievement is a testament to the power of community and the importance of self-determined solutions. Original Power and Ngardara Cooperative are proving that renewable energy is not just a dream, but a reality that can transform lives and sustain our connection to Country in a changing climate,’ Genevieve Grieves said.

The installation was, completed by First Nations not for profit renewable energy developer Original Power, in partnership with Borroloola’s Ngardara Cooperative.
