Big hART is bringing their Songs for Freedom concert to the Melbourne Recital Centre on September 15, the last leg of their highly resonating national tour. The performance will then return home to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the passing of John Pat.

Songs for Freedom is an inspiring concert bringing soul, blues, and unique country music to audiences around the country, aiming to raise awareness about the over-representation of Indigenous youth in the justice system.

With musical direction by Grammy Award winner Lucky Oceans and powerful narration by Ngarluma man, Patrick Churnside, this poignant performance stems from a project that has been running since 2010.

Guided by Ngarluma and Yinjibarndi Elders, the concert pays tribute to the family of John Pat in the 40th anniversary year of his passing in custody.

The performance at the Melbourne Recital Centre marks the last stop of their national tour before they return to Roebourne for a final home-town presentation on the 40th anniversary of John Pat’s passing.

John Pat's violent death in police custody in Roebourne in 1983 ultimately led to the Royal Commission into Deaths in Custody.
