Award-winning Gunditjmara artist Hayley Millar-Baker uses black and white photography and digital technology to explore history, culture, stories and Country.
Photographer Hayley Millar-Baker hails from the Gunditjmara people of Western Victoria. She uses a variety of approaches to photography seeking to recover and recount personal narratives - drawing strength from her bloodlines and inherited histories.
In an interview with NITV Radio, Hayley Millar-Baker describes the stories behind her dream-like black and white photographs. She also reveals her inspiration and process of creation.
Ms Millar-Baker has garnered many accolades for her work. Most recently she won the John and Margaret Baker Memorial Fellowship and will receive a cash prize for her creation, A Series of Unwarranted Events.
This winning art-work portrays stories of the Gunditjmara people that expose realities of life during the colonisation of their country.

The European invasion of western Victoria - where Gunditjmara country is located - was violent, with killings and massacres of Aboriginal people too many to count.
Millar-Baker portrays these events in a very inspirational way, demanding the audience to pause and reflect on what happened there. Yet, her images are not graphic.
She has also been selected as a feature artist in the 2021 International Festival of Photography.
