The National Indigenous Fashion Awards have been long overdue. In this episode of the NITV podcast we explore the world of Indigenous fashion.
Now Indigenous fashion designers for the very first time can be involved in their own industry’s awards night. Before now that couldn’t happen but has become a reality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fashion and textile designers, thanks to the Inaugural National Indigenous Fashion Awards, which was broadcast online on NITV on the 5th of August.
The awards night was held to honour and celebrate the industry and this year $60,000 was up for grabs in prize money. It’s all a part of the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair Foundation and the awards celebrate the diversity and innovative indigenous fashion industry.
The awards also acknowledge the work done by Indigenous designers and artists. The industry, it is a colourful and vibrant and progressive industry with more than 60,000 years of culture and unique designs from the oldest living culture in the world. And in our podcast, we host the awards creative director Nina Fitzgerald and swimwear designer Liandra Gaykamangu, a proud Yolungu woman from North East Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.
