Visitors to the World Science Festival Brisbane 2021 will be able to get a glimpse of the future by learning from the past with First Nations Scientists bringing their cultural and scientific expertise to the world stage.

Rhianna Patrick, a Torres Strait Islander media personality, will moderate panel discussions with First Nations Scientists connecting culture with science in the upcoming World Science Festival 2021 taking place between the 24th and 28th of March in Brisbane.

One of the questions on the agenda is, why aren’t we listening to Indigenous people on climate change?

Many examples illustrating the failure to pay attention to First Nations voices will be considered including the case of 8 Torres Strait Islanders who have taken their claim to the United Nations against the Australian Government for breaching their human rights in its failure to address climate change matters affecting their country.

This case before the UN is the first environmental claim of its kind in the world, yet it hasn’t gained the media attention it deserves at home.
