Yoga Australia is embarked on a pathway to RAP, not your normal RAP as in Reconciliation Action Plan but rather a Reciprocity Action Plan.
Yoga Australia is preparing for a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), but unlike other organisations theirs will be named Reciprocity Action Plan.
Ms Claire Holloway, a board member of Yoga Australia and a Yoga teacher based in Lutriwita (Aboriginal name for Tasmania) told NITV Radio that the concept of Reciprocity is the brainchild of Yoga Australia’s Yarn Circle, a group of Yoga teachers of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background.
She explained that the Yarn Circle is very active supporting or involving and acknowledging Indigenous cultures and practices.
Reconciliation could mean that there is restoration of a relationship that existed. But there was never a relationship to begin with.
Stemming from their many meetings, participants of the Yarning Circle concluded that the word Reconciliation wasn’t quite representative of the actual scenario that occurred in Australia.

“So, they felt that the word reciprocity was a better representation to acknowledge that we are really starting from the beginning with this relationship, and definitely Yoga Australia are starting from the beginning."
Ms Holloway explained that they are still in early stages of developing their plan, but they are very excited about it.
And they want to make sure that the relationship that they are establishing is strong, based on goodwill from both sides and it is a give and take proposition from both sides.
