Australia commitment to Afghanistan now far into future

Top-ranking Australian commanders in the Middle East say the country's commitment to supporting war-torn Afghanistan will last for decades. Australian soldiers have been in Afghanistan almost continually for the past 16 years, and it has become the country's longest-running war. The commitment is being described as flexible but enduring.


The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has approximately 300 people in Afghanistan, about half of them in a combat-oriented, force-protection role.

The rest are completing the "train, advise and assist" mission the ADF committed to in 2015 when conventional combat operations ended.

The commander of Australian forces in the Middle East, Major General John Frewen, (FROO-wun) says Australia cannot let Afghanistan accommodate terrorism again.
