Source: VOA Pashto

On the 12th of August 1948, thousands of Pashtuns participated in a peaceful demonstration in Charsadda District of the North-West Frontier Province (now Khyber Pukhtunkhwa). They were demonstrating against the arrest of Pashtun leaders by the government of Pakistan. The nonviolent demonstrators marched from Charsadda District to Babarra ground. However, when they reached at Babarra, the police and militia started firing at the demonstrators which killed more than 600 demonstrators and injured many others. Babarra massacre is considered a black day in the history of Pushtuns, which is marked every year by Pashtuns around the world on the 12th of August.
