Inquiry set to look into SBS, ABC and 'competitive neutrality'

The Federal Government has appointed an expert panel* to examine whether Australia's national broadcasters operate in a manner consistent with what it calls "competitive neutrality."


The independent inquiry will explore the practices of SBS and the ABC, including the way they compete with the private sector and whether it is appropriate. The inquiry was announced in August last year after the Turnbull Government struck a deal with Pauline Hanson's One Nation party in exchange for support for media reforms. At the time, Senator Hanson said, in buying the rights to major sporting events, the ABC and SBS were moving into areas that impacted commercial television stations.
