What does Islam say about violence against women?

Islam has given equal rights to men and women. When Islam emerged women were given valuable rights in the society and any violence and injustice towards women were seen as unacceptable. The prophet Muhammad (PBH) in his life treated women with dignity and also Allah has clearly mentioned women rights in the Quran, but despite these values there is violence against women. If men are going against the prophet and the Quran, how should we deal with them? We have spoken to a religious scholar Mr Abdul Rahman Abid to share his view on this issue.
