Rohingya is the name given to Sunni Muslims originating from the Arakan (now Rakhine) region of Myanmar.The Rohingya people are denied citizenship in Myanmar and are regarded as illegal immigrants, despite having a heritage claim to the land dating back centuries.Since the riots in 2012 between the Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims - and particularly in the aftermath of the violent clashes in August 25, 2017, between militants and the government - tens of thousands of people have fled across the Bangladesh border, according to army reports.
