Why is International Women’s Day important?

For the first time in 1909 the Socialist Party of America observed Women's Day and then later in 1975 United Nations named March 8th as International Women's Day. International Women's Day is observed around the world, with one of the aims of the day being to end violence against women, but how effective are such celebrations? In Pakistan's KPK women's rights activist Shabina Ayaz highlights the significance of this day. She says there is a growing awareness for the struggle for equal rights and opportunities for women.
