Hossein Valamanesh is an Australian contemporary artist. Valamanesh emigrated to Australia in 1973, and lives and works in Adelaide, South Australia.
He is the fourth recipient of the biennial Art and Moving Image Commission, offered by the Adelaide Film Festival.
Char Soo is Hossein Valamanesh’s first major moving image work.
A four-‐screen video projection filmed in Iran, in a four-‐sided bazaar, to capture a segment of life in an ever-changing world. Char Soo explores and contemplates the notion of movement and the passing of time. Underlying this observation is Hossein Valamanesh’s personal and emotional connection to his birthplace, Iran.
The ‘Char Soo’ (four sides) can be seen as a metaphor for Iran itself, as it has been a crossroad for invasions, religions, commerce and cultural interaction for centuries.
Char Soo is a landmark projectfor Valamanesh, as it marks the first time he has created a major work in Iran, his country of birth.
Hossein Valamanesh’s key collaborators on Char Soo are his son Nassiem Valamanesh, film producer Bridget Ikin, and, as line producer/ DOP in Iran, M. Reza Jahanpanah.
