A 32-year-old Brazilian national has been charged with allegedly attempting to bring cocaine into Australia.

The man fronted Brisbane's Magistrate Court yesterday, where he was remanded in custody.

The Australian Border Force said in a statement that they examined the man's bags at Brisbane International Airport on Sunday 30 October, after he arrived from the United Arab Emirates.

The passenger's bags were x-rayed and a white powder, which later tested positive for cocaine, was located concealed in the lining of his bag.

Police advise that the estimated total weight of the substance, including the weight of the suitcase, is approximately six kilograms, with the exact total weight to be determined by further forensic testing.

The matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police, who charged the man with importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug.

The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment.

The case marks the second time this month that a Brazilian national has been charged with a similar offense, after a Brazilian woman was arrested at Sydney International Airport earlier this month when she was apprehended carrying a crystalline substance (later found to be cocaine) hidden in the lining of her suitcase.
