Gott died on Thursday 31 May in Rio de Janeiro after five months in coma. A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told SBS Portuguese that the "DFAT is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Brazil. Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment."
Consular assistance may include support and guidance to families and liaison with local and Australian authorities to assist with funeral arrangements or repatriation of remains. Australian Embassies have no authority to intervene in local judicial matters, conduct local investigations, or pay for funeral or repatriation costs.
A source from the 12th Police Department in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, told SBS Portuguese that with Gott’s death the investigation about his movements in Brazil hasn’t changed but there is a risk that the inquiry may be archived by the Public Prosecutor’s office.
The Press Secretary of Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal Office of Health authorities confirmed Gott’s death from multiple organ failure on Thursday, 31 May, as reported by SBS Portuguese on Sunday 4 June.
