ਗੁਰਬੀਰ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਅਟਾਰਨੀ ਜਨਰਲ ਚੁਣੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਚੋਣ ਮੌਕੇ 44 ਸਾਲਾ ਗੁਰਬੀਰ ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਵੀ ਵੋਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈ। ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਧਿਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਰੋਧੀ ਪਾਰਟੀ, ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਨਿਊਯਾਰਕ ਦੀ ਸਾਊਥ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਬਾਰ ਅੇਸੋਸੀਏਸ਼ਨ ਬਾਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਵੀ ਰਹਿ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਉਹ ਨਿਊ ਜਰਸੀ ਦੇ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਪੈਸਫਿਕ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਲਾੱਇਰਸ ਐਸੋਸੀਏਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਵੀ ਰਹਿ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ।

ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਨੇ 1995 ਵਿੱਚ ਜੌਰਜਟਾਊਨ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਸਕੂਲ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। 1999 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਾਰਸ਼ਲ-ਵਾਇਥ ਸਕੂਲ ਆਫ ਲਾਅ ਤੋਂ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਦੀ ਡਿਗਰੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਗਰੇਵਾਲ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਧੀਆਂ ਕਿਰਪਾ, ਮੇਹਰ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਕ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਬੀਤੇ ਸਾਲ ਨਵੰਬਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਭੱਲਾ ਨਿਊਜਰਸੀ ਦੇ ਹੋਬੋਕਨ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਮੇਅਰ ਚੁਣੇ ਗਏ ਸਨ। ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਉੱਚ ਅਹੁਦਿਆਂ ‘ਤੇ ਨਿਯੁਕਤ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਨਸਲੀ ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਘੱਟ ਹੋਣ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਥਾਨਕ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ।

Former Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Singh Grewal became the first Sikh state attorney general after his nomination was confirmed by the governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy on Tuesday. 

Grewal, 44, is also the first South Asian-American attorney general in New Jersey.

The Senate voted 29-0 on Tuesday, the 16^th January to confirm his nomination.

"I never imagined that my life's journey could bring me here today," Grewal said after his confirmation.

Grewal’s nomination is the second notable accomplishment of Sikhs in New Jersey, and in United States.  

Last month, Ravinder Bhalla was elected mayor of Hoboken becoming the first Sikh to hold that office in New Jersey.

Meet the Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal

Grewal is a first-generation New Jersey resident, born to Indian immigrant parents in Jersey City and raised in Hudson and Bergen counties. 

He was appointed as Acting Bergen County Prosecutor on January 4, 2016, and sworn in as Bergen County Prosecutor on November 14, 2016.

As Prosecutor, he was the chief law enforcement officer of Bergen County – the most populous county in New Jersey and home to nearly 1 million residents living in 70 municipalities. 

Before becoming a federal prosecutor, he also served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States.

Grewal graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1995. 

He obtained his law degree from the College of William & Mary, Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 1999.

Grewal is a native of New Jersey, and currently resides in Glen Rock with his wife, Amrit, and their three daughters, Kyrpa, Mayher, and Mahek.
