ਸਿਡਨੀ ਦੇ ਗਲੇਨਮੋਰ ਪਾਰਕ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੇ ਵਸਨੀਕ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੇ ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਛੇ ਸੌ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਇਨਾਮ, ਟਰੋਫੀਜ਼ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਨ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਜਿੱਤ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ੨੨੦ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਇਨਾਮ ਹਨ।
ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਐਸ ਬੀ ਐਸ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਫੁੱਲ-ਬੂਟਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਕੈਕਟਸ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਿਤਾਬੀ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ੨੦੧੪ ਤੋਂ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਲੈਣ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ।
"ਇਨਾਮਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਡਨੀ ਰਾਇਲ ਈਸਟਰ ਸ਼ੋ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਕਟਸ ਐਂਡ ਸਕੂਲੈਂਟ ਸੋਸਾਇਟੀ ਓਫ ਨਿਊ ਸਾਊਥ ਵੇਲਜ਼ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
"ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਿਡਨੀ ਦੀ ਪਾਰਲੀਮੈਂਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਸਾਖੀ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ 'ਪੰਜਾਬੀਅਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ' ਸਨਮਾਨ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜੀਹਦੇ ਲਈ ਅਸੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਵੀ ਰਿਣੀ ਹਾਂ।
“ਕੈਕਟਸ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾਵ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖਾਸ ਵਜ੍ਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਬੱਸ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਨਣ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਢੰਗ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ। ਕੈਕਟਸ ਦੇ ਕੰਡਿਆਂ ਚ ਉੱਗੇ ਫੁੱਲ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਔਕੜਾਂ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਹੱਸਣਾ ਸਿਖਾਂਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
"ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸ਼ੌਕ ਜੋ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਰੋਗ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਲੱਗਿਆ।
“ਇਹ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਭਵ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਹਦੀ ਹੱਲਾਸ਼ੇਰੀ ਤੇ ਸਾਥ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੁਣ ਬੂਟਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ੧੦,੦੦੦ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਗਈ ਹੈ।”
ਕੁਲਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਦਾ ਆਖਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ 'ਡਾਲੀ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਤੋੜ ਨਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਸਾਂ ਹੱਟ ਮਹਿਕ ਦੀ ਲਈ' ਤੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਣਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕੁਦਰਤ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ-ਮਿੱਕ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਹਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਾਂ ਕੱਢਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

With a collection of more than 10,000 succulents, this Indian-Australian family is still keen to expand their pool of these contemporary and easy-care plants.
Ranjit Singh and Kulwant Kaur live in Sydney’s western suburb of Glenmore Park. As passionate succulent plant growers, they’re named among Australia’s top gardeners.
Ranjit Singh told SBS Punjabi that they are regular participants at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and other competitions organised by the Cactus and Succulent Society of NSW.
“We started participating in the plant shows and competitions since 2014. So far we have bagged more than 600 awards which also include 220 first prizes in various categories,” he said.
“At this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show, we won awards for the Supreme Champion, Most Successful Exhibitor and an Award of Excellence from the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW.
In addition to seven Champion trophies, the Singh family also holds the Johana Stark Trophy by the Cactus and Succulents Society of New South Wales for year 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Kulwant Kaur who shares this passion with her husband said that she is mesmerized by the beauty of the cacti plants.
“You can’t miss the beauty of a cacti flower. The bright coloured flowers circling around the top of each globe look like a crown among thorns.
“It needs a lot of care and passion to grow succulents and cacti plants. It is a bit of hard work, but if you’ve an eye [for beauty] you can easily find time for this hobby.
While giving some tips about cultivation, Ranjit Singh explained that all cacti are succulents but not all succulents are cacti.
“Succulents are known for their ability to store water within their leaves, stems or roots. This storage helps them survive long stretches without water,” he said. “On the other hand, the Cacti are those succulents that have distinguished spines.”
“They need less water but that doesn’t mean less care. Cacti usually love a hot and dry environment. But given the right conditions they can be successfully grown in most climates.
“For a successful cultivation, you’ll need free draining soil or potting mix. You’ll also need to make sure that there is plenty of air movement which will help them survive and thrive."
Before coming to Australia, Ranjit Singh was in a teaching and research post at the Department of Zoology and Fisheries at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), in Ludhiana in Punjab.
“It was just a hobby and now I am thinking of turning this passion into a profession.
“I wish to expand this facility. But for that purpose, I will need more space and there is none left in the front or backyard.
“We are now in process of finding a new home for the plants that we wish to turn into a nursery.
“We also aim to generate some returns using the medicinal and beauty benefits of these remarkable plants.
