ਉੱਘੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਓਜ਼ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਕੋਪਰੇਟਿਵ ਸੋਸਾਇਟੀ ਦੇ ਚੇਅਰਮੈਨ ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੱਧ-ਉੱਤਰੀ ਕੋਸਟ ਦੇ ਕੌਫਸ ਹਾਰਬਰ ਹਲਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲਜ਼ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦੀ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨਗੇ।
ਸਿੰਘ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਪਿਛਲੀਆਂ ਚਾਰ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਦੇ ਧੰਦੇ ਦੇ ਚਲਦਿਆਂ ਸਥਾਨਿਕ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਇਕ-ਮਿੱਕ ਹੈ। ਬਲੂਬੈਰੀ ਦੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਇਸ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਓਜ਼ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਕੋਪਰੇਟਿਵ ਸੋਸਾਇਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਨੇ ਐਸ ਬੀ ਐਸ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਗਾਮੀ ਚੋਣਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲਜ਼ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਨਿਧਤਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਪਣੇ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
"ਅਸੀਂ ਇਕ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਚਲਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਾਂ। ਮੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਮਕਸਦ ਕੌਫਸ ਹਾਰਬਰ ਹਲਕੇ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ।"
ਪਾਰਟੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਉਸ ਵੇਲ਼ੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਪਿੱਛਲੇ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ (1990 ਤੋਂ) ਸਾਂਸਦ ਰਹੇ ਐਮ ਪੀ ਐਂਡਰਿਊ ਨੇ ਫਰੇਜ਼ਰ ਰਿਟਾਇਰ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵੀ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਪਾਰਲੀਮੈਂਟ ਬਣਨ ਲਈ ਲੋੜੀਂਦੇ ਹੁਨਰ ਹਨ।

ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਮੈਂ ਕੁਝ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਨਾਲ਼ ਜੁੜ੍ਹੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਨਿਧਤਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਗਰਮ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਤਜ਼ਰਬਾ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਦੀ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਗੀ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵਰਤ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।"
"ਮੇਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ 1940 ਤੋਂ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਲਈ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਪੜਦਾਦਾ ਬੇਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ 1890 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੇਲੀਆ ਆਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਐਨ ਐਸ ਡਬਲਯੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਉੱਤਰੀ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੰਨਾ-ਕਟਾਈ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਦਾਦਾ, ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿੰਘ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੂਲਗੋਲਗਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੈ ਆਏ ਜਿਥੇ ਕਿ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੇਸ਼ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਖੇਤਰੀ ਐਨ ਐਸ ਡਬਲਯੂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਪਾਰਟੀ ਦਾ ਇਸ ਖਿੱਤੇ ਦੇ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਲਈ ਦਿਨ-ਰਾਤ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਰਿਕਾਰਡ ਹੈ।

"ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਲ 2000 ਵਿਚ ਸਕੂਲ ਛੱਡਿਆ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਡਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਜ਼ਗਾਰ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਮੈਂ 9 ਸਾਲ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ਕਿਸਮਤ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਤਣ ‘ਚ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਇਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
"ਮੈਂ ਭਵਿੱਖ 'ਚ ਦੇਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਸਾਡੇ ਇਲਾਕ਼ੇ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਮੌਕਿਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋਣ। ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ।
“ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਸੈਕਟਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਮੌਕੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼-ਨਾਲ਼ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ, ਹਸਪਤਾਲਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਐਮਰਜੈਂਸੀ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਕਾਫੀ ਫੰਡ ਹੋਣ।

A prominent local farmer Gurmesh Singh will represent The Nationals at the Mid North Coast seat of Coffs Harbour in NSW state elections.
A born-and-bred in Coffs Harbour, Mr Singh's family has lived in the country for four generations. He is also the chairman of Oz Group Co-Op*.
He told SBS Punjabi that he is already looking forward to representing Nationals at the upcoming elections.
“We’re running a very positive campaign. It is about all the great things the Nationals can do for Coffs Harbour," he said.
Mr Singh's election came about after long-serving MP Andrew Fraser decided to retire after representing this seat since 1990.
MP Fraser has congratulated Mr Singh, saying: "I look forward to assisting Gurmesh over coming months to make sure he is elected as the next Member for Coffs Harbour in Government. This is a demonstration of the multicultural nature of our community."
Mr Singh was also full of praise for retiring member Andrew Fraser, “Mr Fraser epitomises what it means to be a good local member – he has the community’s best interests at heart. I want to emulate his record of delivery and service to our community.”
Having been a community leader for a number of years, Mr Singh believes that he has the skills required to be an effective Member of Parliament.
“I have been active in representing the farming community for a few years and I believe that I can take that experience and use it to represent the wider community," he said.
"My family has lived in the Coffs Harbour area since the 1940s and we believe very passionately that this is the greatest place to live in the world.
“Regional Centres like Coffs Harbour are vulnerable to poor government and need good representations from people who understand the local issues, and are going to fight for the best outcomes.
Mr Singh’s Great Grandfather Bella Singh came to Australia in the 1890’s and cut cane in the Northern Rivers of NSW. Pritam Singh, Gurmesh’s grandfather, moved the family to Woolgoolga and they have been farming the area ever since.
Mr Singh adds, “Regional NSW faces different challenges to the cities and the National Party has a passion and a track record for ensuring a fair go for rural and regional communities.
“When I left school in the year 2000, I had to seek opportunities in Sydney – where I studied and worked for 9 years. I was fortunate to be able to return to the area I love and raise my children here.
“I want to see a future where children from Coffs Harbour have the same opportunities as children from the city. I will work to foster the growth of jobs – everything from entry-level positions up to highly skilled tech positions. I want to ensure that we have enough funding for schools, hospitals, and emergency services.
“I also want to protect our farmers and fishers from ideologues who don’t understand the farming and want to burden small businesses with more and more red tape.”
*More than 100 blueberry growing Sikh farmers from the mid-north coast of NSW have joined hands to form the Oz Group Co-operative. In the past few years, covering an area of 700 hectares of blueberry bushes, this Co-op has become one of the biggest blueberry suppliers in Australia.
