The charges against a Shepparton taxi driver allegedly involved in a crash earlier this year have been upgraded.

37-year-old Jatinder Panesar appeared in Shepparton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He has now been charged with four counts of dangerous driving causing death.

He was earlier facing a single count of dangerous driving causing death.

The charges against Mr Panesar have been upgraded following the death of three more people involved in the crash between his taxi and a minibus carrying nursing home residents back from a visit to a bakery on June 20 this year.

Police allege the taxi driver went through the intersection at Pyke and Turnbull roads in Ardmona, near Shepparton and T-boned the bus, causing it to roll.

The Indian immigrant must report regularly to police under strict bail conditions and must not leave Victoria.

He is due in court again on December 20 for a committal hearing.
