Federal Government to force local councils to hold Australia Day citizenship ceremonies

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the federal government's revisions to the citizenship code will prevent Australia Day from being eroded.

The revisions, which come into effect in 2020, force every council to hold citizenship ceremonies on January the 26th.

The government hopes the rules, which also includes a new dress code, will stop individual councils holding ceremonies on other days.

Mr Morrison has told the ABC he believes the changes will help preserve January 26th as an important day for all Australians, whatever their background.

"I'm going to ensure it's not going to get eroded and that it's constantly being reinvested in and continually held up as an important day for all Australians to come together on that day. That is our historical day and we need to work together to come together on that day", - Mr Morrison said.

Those opposed to Australia Day, mainly for the date on which is celebrated, do so because of the historical significance - the British invasion, and the destruction and violence it brought.

At the same time, Labor leader Bill Shorten is accusing the government of playing politics.

The main group representing local government and councils is sceptical of the move.

Australian Local Government Association President, David O'Loughlin, believes linking citizenship ceremonies to Australia Day is strange.

"If you want to reinforce Australia Day for being the best for Australia, why wouldn't you start by having all the awards for Australia Day announced on the day? Even the federal government's 'Australian Of The Year' award is announced on the night before. And all the states and territories, their governors arrange their awards to be in the weeks leading up to Australia Day".

But country Liberal Party candidate for Lingiari, Jacinta Price, supports the change.

"We have to be grown up enough to get to that sort of point where we are looking at becoming one as a nation and not fracturing off and being fractured. I think it is utterly wrong. And I stand behind our Prime Minister on his decision for this", - Price said.
