Liberal MP Trent Zimmerman has confirmed alleged Islamic State jihadist and recruiter Neil Prakash has been stripped of Australian citizenship.

Prakash is currently jailed in Turkey over terrorism-related activities.

Speaking to the ABC Mr Zimmerman says the 27-year-old's citizenship has been revoked.

"The Minister for Home Affairs has confirmed that his citizenship has been removed and this is part of legislation which basically says that if you are part of a listed terrorist organisation and you are a dual citizen then you can have your Australian citizenship removed."

It is believed Prakash also holds Fijian citizenship.

Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester has defended the government's decision.

He has told the ABC the government makes no apology for being tough in this area.

"We have been warning people now for many years - do not travel to these parts of the world where conflicts exist, do not associate with known terrorist organisations and I think the Australian people would expect their government to revoke the citizenship rights of people who act inappropriately. I mean, Australian citizenship  gives you rights but it also gives you responsibilities and responsibilities around allegiance to Australia and not consorting with these terrorist organisations".
