A Sydney family ran an expansive crime empire that stole and illegally exported thousands of tins of baby formula to China, police allege.

The arrest came over the weekend, when a 31-year-old man was detained at Sydney Airport after he arrived on a flight from China.

Police on Monday said they had arrested six people - including four from the same family - over the alleged coordinated theft of more than 4000 tins of baby formula, manuka honey and other goods.

They also seized more than $200,000 in cash.

New South Wales Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty says he expects more arrests to be made.

"Police will continue to pursue these people, because not only are they making a quick dollar out of greed and disadvantaging the mums and dads of Australia. They're also literally taking baby formula out of the mouths of babies", - Detective said.
