Key business groups in South Australia are backing a push to ban single-use plastics in the state.

A discussion paper has been released seeking public feedback on state-wide bans on single-use plastic coffee cups, straws, cutlery and shopping bags.

Business SA says the state should consider accepting a small amount of inconvenience for the sake of the environment.

South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young says she’d like to see other states back a ban.

"We need this ban to not be just here in South Australia, built to go across the rest of the country. So I call o the state environment minister here to put on the COAG agenda at the next meeting, a firm push to ban single-use plastics", - senator said.
