A teenage boy has appeared in a Children's Court, charged with murder after a Church of Scientology member was stabbed to death at its Australasian headquarters on Sydney's Lower North Shore.

The 24-year old Taiwanese national was stabbed in the neck while escorting the 16-year-old down the driveway after he was asked to leave the Chatswood premises on Friday.

He has been charged with murder, common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Mick Fitzgerald says he had a history of mental health issues.

"To the members of the public who were here, this would have been a horrific type of incident. It was a man who was attempting to do everything he can to avoid arrest. His actions is the actions of a person who we believe had mental health problems"- Fitzgerald said.
