The C-S-I-R-O says scientists have wiped out more than 80 per cent of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito population in three locations around the town of Innisfail over a three-month trial.
It involved releasing millions of sterile male mosquitoes that mated with females, but couldn't produce offspring.
The insect is responsible for infecting almost 400-million people globally with diseases including Zika, Dengue and Chikungunya.
The research could be crucial in densely populated urban areas, particularly as climate change and warmer temperatures mean mosquitoes move beyond tropical areas.
