Australian Serbian Commerce Chamber (ASCC) in conjunction with Etihad Airways and Air Serbia hosted a hospitality event on 10 June at Etihad Stadium, Melbourne, promoting Serbia as a Travel and Tourism Destination to Travel Agents, Tour Operators and members of the Melbourne business community.
Guests included decision makers from Flight Centre, PwC, Global IT Factory, RAS Trade, MSS, Goldmark Finance, Seek Visa, Metro Constructions and members of the ASCC. They were treated to an outstanding Tourism of Serbia Audio Visual compilation and various collateral about Serbia, Etihad Airways and Air Serbia was distributed and on display. The
guests were intrigued by the up and coming events of cultural exchange between Australia and Serbia, including the Sydney University archaeological excavations in Sremska Mitrovica (Sirmium) and the visit of the Nikola Tesla Museum to both Perth and Sydney.
Australia and Serbia have a proud history of direct air links dating back to the 1970s and the current daily flights are maintained by the Etihad Airways/Air Serbia alliance via their Abu Dhabi, UAE hub and then directly onto Belgrade, Serbia. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of travellers between the two countries have been growing steadily and currently a total of close to 20,000 passengers transit between the two countries per annum. For the 12 month period ending September 2016, the growth in passenger numbers has been 8.3% and 4.7% for the passengers travelling Australia to Serbia and Serbia to Australia respectively.
Tourism in Serbia has experienced significant growth over the last decade with the country focusing on niche offerings including Belgrade and Novi Sad city breaks, river cruising along Danube and major events including the Guča Trumpet Festival and Exit Music Festival. Other focus areas include spa tourism, ski resorts and the etno-cultural touring.
