Serbia marks Statehood Day

On February 15, Serbia commemorates the outbreak of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman rule in 1804. The revolution resulted in the recognition of Serbian statehood by Ottoman Empire in 1817. On the same day in 1835 the First Serbian Constitution was adopted. That event symbolizes rebirth of Serbian State and the beginning of contemporary statehood

Republic of Serbia today marks Statehood Day.

On February 15, Serbia commemorates the outbreak of the First Serbian Uprising against Ottoman Turk invaders in Orasac, central Serbia, in 1804. The revolution resulted in the recognition of Serbian statehood by Ottoman Empire in 1817.

On the same day in 1835, during the rule of Prince Milos Obrenovic, the First Serbian Constitution was adopted in Kragujevac. That event symbolizes rebirth of Serbian State and the beginning of contemporary statehood.

Serbia marks Statehood Day with a number of ceremonies throughout the country. Also, the holiday will be marked within Serbian community in other countries, including Australia. The Serbian Embassy in Canberra and the Consulate General of Serbia in Sydney today will host a formal receptions on the occasion of the National Day.
