Patients could be prescribed more cheaper generic drugs under changes to be unveiled in next week's federal budget.

There are reports that the government intends to change prescribing software used by doctors so they would have to actively nominate a named drug rather than a generic.

The opt out regime, alongside other measures to be agreed between the government

and Medicines Australia, could save the budget $1.8 billion over five years.
