A parliamentary committee has heard Australia might have to commit to a 70 per cent renewable target in the next 13 years to meet its emissions reduction targets.

The committee is investigating Australia's electricity grid as debate continues over how best to bring down the cost of power.

The head of the Energy Efficiency Council, Robert Murray-Leach told the hearing, the CSIRO is predicting a much higher reliance on renewable energy.
