Former High Court Justice Michael Kirby says Australia is likely to face closer scrutiny of its policies on refugees and asylum seekers, now it's on the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Australia will today start its three-year term on the council, after becoming one of 15 nations elected in October.
The U-N has been a vocal critic of the government and its continued operation of offshore detention centres.
Speaking to the A-B-C, Mr Kirby says Australia should be ready to face its critics.
