Acting Prime Minister Julie Bishop says the government is not interested in a referendum on changing the citizenship section of the Australian constitution.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Barnarby Joyce, who has started his campaign for the New England by-election after the High Court disqualified him for his dual citizenhip, has called for a referendum into the matter.

But Ms Bishop has told the A-B-C the government is satisified with the latest clarification of Section 44.

"It's been part of the consititution since 1901. Seven judges of the High Court have now determined what it means and its pretty clear. Of course, we are going through the detail of the judgement to ascertain any other applications for it. But at this stage we have referred the matter to the joint standing committee on electoral matters. And that committee will consider the judgement very carefully and will make recommendations to the government." Julie Bishop stated.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Attorney-General George Brandis have also said such a referendum isn't needed.
