Biomedical scientist Professor Alan Mackay-Simhas been awarded the 2017 Australian of the Year, for his work with stem cell research.
In a ceremony at Parliament House, Professor Mackay-Sim was handed the Australian of the Year trophy by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
The Senior Australian of the Year is Sister Anne Gardiner of the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, while the Young Australian of the Year is South Australian fashion designer Paul Vasileff.
