Australian Gas Export

The federal government is set to announce (27/04) new powers allowing it to impose export controls on gas companies, to guarantee domestic supply.

Under the changes, exporters who take more from the Australian market than they put in will be forced to explain how they plan to fill the shortfall of domestic gas.

The Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says domestic prices need to fairly reflect international export prices, after a domestic gas shortage boosted prices.

Mr Turnbull says the restrictions will be targeted and temporary, and are expected to apply only to east coast producers.

Meanwhile, the Resources Minister Matt Canavan told the A-B-C from July the government will have the power to restrict exports in the interest of domestic manufacturers.
