The federal government has accepted a decision by the Fair Work Commission to cut weekend penalty rates for some workers in the retail, hospitality, pharmacy and fast-food industries.

The reductions affect full-time, part-time and casual staff who work on Sundays.

The Commission agreed with a report by the Productivity Commission last year arguing there could be some positive effects on employment if penalty rates were reduced.

The Employment Minister Michaelia Cash says many employers have been limited by the current rates.
