The federal government is claiming credit for a rise in full-time employment.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show full-time employment rose by 6,100 in September, with the number of part-time employees up by 13,700.
The nation's unemployment rate fell slightly to 5.5 per cent, from 5.6 per cent in August.
The participation rate - the number of people employed or actively looking for a job - was steady at 65.2 per cent.
Employment Minister Michaelia Cash says employers are being affected by government policy.
