Authorities in the U-S state of Texas say a shooting in which 26 people died and another 20 were wounded, stemmed from a domestic situation.

A lone gunman carrying an assault rifle opened fire on the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, about 65 kilometres east of San Antonio, during the Sunday morning service.

He has been identified as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley.

US President Donald Trump has sidestepped the issue of gun control, calling the shooting, the state's worst in modern history, a "mental health problem".

Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director, Freeman Martin, says Mr Kelley had a history of conflict with his in-laws.
