Victoria's controversial assisted dying legislation has passed the first phase of debate in the lower house.
The bill will now be considered line-by-line and amendments proposed by MPs have been circulated for consideration during debate on Thursday.
It comes after Deputy Premier James Merlino unsuccessfully tried to derail the bill with a reason amendment.
His move lost 47-39 about 11.30pm on Wednesday and is in stark contrast to Premier Daniel Andrews', who has been pushing for the change since the death of his father last year.
Mr Andrews and Health Minister Jill Hennessy are proposing to introduce assisted dying for the terminally ill who have a diagnosis of 12 months to live or less.
Both sides have given their MPs a conscience vote on the matter.
The lower house spent has spent two days debating the bill until midnight.
