Tropical Cyclone Debbie has been downgraded to a category three system, having made landfall along the north Queensland coastline near Airlie Beach earlier this afternoon as a slow-moving category four system.

This morning the very destructive 50-kilometre-diameter eye wall passed Hayman Island and it is currently impacting the Whitsunday Islands and nearby mainland.

At a media briefing this afternoon, Queensland Police Service Commissioner Ian Stewart said a man had been seriously injured in Proserpine.
