Senior figures from the two parties that have governed France for decades have backed the centrist Emmanuel Macron for next month's presidential runoff (May 7)after their own defeat in the first round of the election.

Mr Macron, an independent candidate, advanced to the second round vote where he will face his far-right nationalist rival Marine Le Pen.

The outgoing President Francois Hollande says only Mr Macron, a former economy minister in his Socialist government, can unify the country.

Polling ahead of the second round vote of the French election suggests Emmanuel Macron will be elected to the presidency with more than 60 per cent of the vote.

The agency Elabe predicts Marine Le Pen will garner some 36 per cent.
