The federal government will call a three month national gun amnesty, the first since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

The amnesty is being held against a backdrop of an increased threat of terrorism and ongoing shootings and gun violence across the country.

The government estimates there are 260,000 illegal guns in the community.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan who will today confirm details of the amnesty, which is due to begin on July 1 has told the A-B-C it's essential the guns don't get into the wrong hands.
