France is set to ban the sale of any car that uses petrol or diesel fuel by 2040.
The country's Environment Minister, Nicolas Hulot, is calling it a "revolution", and says the planned ban on fossil fuel vehicles is part of a renewed commitment to the Paris climate deal.
Mr Hulot is a veteran environmental campaigner who was recently appointed to the post by President Emmanuel Macron,
It comes after Swedish car manufacturer, Volvo, announced plans to phase out the internal combustion engine saying it will begin producing electric motors on all its cars from 2019.
