The Greens have unveiled their childcare model, promising all families would be able to access a guaranteed minimum of 24 hours subsidised care each week.

There would be a single means-tested payment model, with families earning less than $65,000 a year having 85 per cent of the cost of care covered.

That would reduce for those better off, with families earning more than $340,000 a year having to pay 80 per cent of the cost.

Greens early childhood spokeswoman an Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said that would add $370 million a year to the cost of the government's proposed $3 billion childcare overhaul announced in the May budget.

"With 24 hours of subsidy being made available to all families, the Greens plan would give mums and dads access to 2-3 days of care a week while helping them to balance the household budget," she said in a statement.

The Greens would also establish a $200 million fund for centres in high need areas to improve their facilities.
