Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has told 2GB he is dissapointed with the way Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is handling the same sex marriage bill.
Liberal Dean Smith's largely unamended private members bill was passed on Wednesday with senators voting 43-12 in favour of changing the Marriage Act.
Some conservatives moved amendments to provide further religious protections which were voted down.
Mr Abbott was hoping for a different outcome.
"And it's disappointing that the government has not done more to ensure that freedom of religion is protected at the same time that same sex marriage is passed." Abbott said.
Debate in the House of Representatives is likely to start on Monday, and a vote is likely before the end of the week.
