Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala became the first Sri Lankan to reach the summit of the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest, accomplishing her life-long dream to bring glory to her motherland Sri Lanka.

Her partner Johann Peiris is close behind, making his way to the top of the giant peak.

“Johann made it to beyond Camp 4 and Jayanthi along with her Nepalese Sherpa or guide, Fura Gyalzen, continued to the summit. This was a strenuous overnight trek through the Everest’s Death Zone that was lit by the full moon,” said a statement issued by the support group.

Camp 4, commonly known as the death zone is considered to be the most dangerous part of the journey.

Also Queensland teenager Alyssa Azar has become the youngest Australian to reach the peak of Mount Everest, in a case of third time lucky.
