Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek says she does not want doctors to be the final decision-makers on the eligibility of sick refugees to travel to Australia.

Ms Plibersek was discussing the so-called "Nauru Bill" proposed by Sydney independent MP, Dr Kerryn Phelps. The legislation would allow critically-ill refugees to be flown to Australia for medical treatment on the advice of two treating doctors.

Ms Plibersek told the ABC Labor supports the proposed bill, but wants the immigration minister to make the final call.
