Outgoing French President Francois Hollande has confirmed the formal handover of power to his successor will take place on Sunday (14/05).

Emmanuel Macron became the country's youngest president after defeating right-wing nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen in the election run-off last weekend.

Mr Macron's inauguration will be held at the presidential residence, the Elysee Palace, in Paris.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has vowed to help France tackle unemployment and to work with President-elect Emmanuel Macron to promote European stability.

Ms Merkel says Mr Macron ran a courageous pro-European campaign, and that he stands for openness and is committed decisively to a social market economy.

And she has welcomed his election victory.
