Heavy rain breaks the Melbourne weather records as the city's biggest January deluge since 2004.

Melbourne has received 38.8mm recorded rainfall across last 24 hours and it flagged the city's biggest January deluge since 2004.

Melbournian passed extreme hot weekend and faced suddenly cool weather as it dropped about 10C late on Monday.

Meanwhile, an outer northwest suburb of Sunbury received almost double the dose at 73mm.
