An annual survey of rental affordability has found that millions of Australians are struggling to find affordable and appropriate homes to rent.

Anglicare Australia's report says a shortage of affordable rentals means that people on low incomes are struggling to pay rent and make ends meet.

The organisation says the worst-affected are social security recipients, for whom prioritising rent means they often can't afford food, clothing, transport or visits to the doctor.

It's calling on the federal government to take action to address the issue in the May Budget.

Executive Director Kasy Chambers told the A-B-C even regional areas are no longer providing rental relief.
