Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says, if elected, his Labor Party will raise Australia's annual refugee intake to 32,000 people.
Labor has also promised $500 million in funding to support United Nations work with asylum seekers and says it will send more Australian officials overseas to stop people smuggling at the source.
Labor has confirmed offshore processing will continue, but Mr Shorten says Australia can have secure borders while looking after refugees.
One Nation Party Leader Pauline Hansen has told Sky News Labor would lose control of Australia's borders if it followed through on its announcement.
